8 Christmases in Beauty

“Every traveler has a home of his own,
and he learns to appreciate it the more from his wandering.”

Pitching a tent on Christmas Eve under the stars is an old tradition we picked up from a family of refugees.

You’ve heard the story.

In a time of war and occupation – a man and his pregnant wife – are forced to travel long-distance on foot to register. Arriving to their destination the woman falls into labor and every room in the city is occupied. Giving birth in the street is not an option because cars haven’t been invented yet. Seeing their distress, a lovely hotel manager says, “Don’t worry, be happy” and directs the refugees to a nearby stable.

Christmas 2021- Coronado, California

There, the woman delivers a boy. As they count the child’s fingers and toes, a caravan of rich Snowbirds arrive with beaucoup provisions and wampum from afar.

Christmas 2020 – Gulf Shores, Alabama

Then, from outta nowhere, a big ol’ fais do do starts up. A shepherd serves up a steaming-hot kosher gumbo from the campfire. It’s all ça c’est bon until word arrives about the law being on the way to raid the camp. So, the refugees skedaddle across the border and live in the shadows as “illegals” until they can return home.

Christmas 2019 – Borrego Desert

It’s an old story we see playing out every day as people are caught up or drawn into miserable situations. But dwelling on the socio-political details behind the holy-family’s hardships – and without looking further than the obvious religious message – misses the key point which is: Eventually, everything’s gonna be alright.

Pico at Aunt Deborah’s house in the Smoky Mountains

The same for Hanukkah. With a backstory of occupation, war, attacks on free speech and a devastating massacre – a mundane kitchen ingredient comes to the rescue, assuring the people that Darkness is defeated, there is nothing to fear and, eventually, all will be better than good.

Christmas 2017 – Greenacres, Florida

The Celebration

The expectation of brighter days ahead is good enough reason to break out the Trailer Christmas box every year and begin a month-long celebration.

Christmas 2016 – Pensacola, Florida. This bauble tree, handmade by my sister Deborah is the first ornament to go up after Thanksgiving.
Christmas 2019 – Festive Window Stars brighten the short winter days.
Cheery scratch-paper decorations make the most of natural light. Some of these were made more than 30 years ago.

The Tree

When the thanksgiving dishes are done we strive to fulfill the pagan evergreen requirement. Long ago, we settled on a live, size-appropriate Rosemary “Tree.”

The Food

The Rosemary tree’s pleasant fragrance is a comfort, especially when we bring it inside on cold, stormy nights. Bonus tip: It’s edible! Fragrant “boughs” from our little tree grace several of our favorite holiday treats.

Preparing a seeded rosemary-herbed bread in the Lekue Bread Maker, Christmas 2018 – Mesa, AZ

Our Living in Beauty Christmas isn’t a laissez-faire hamburgers-and-beer escape from holiday crowds and over-consumption (though we heartily endorse that concept). Even though we travel lightly, we’re fiercely traditional. It wouldn’t be Christmas without Bagna Cauda and roasted roots on Christmas Eve,

Bagna Cauda, Christmas Eve 2022 – Chula Vista, California

and satsuma cake for Christmas Day breakfast,

Christmas 2021 – Chula Vista, California

Jim’s grilled Turkey Cutlets for Christmas dinner,

a homemade loaf or two of pompe à l’huile, a French Christmas tradition from Provence,

Christmas 2016 – Pot-luck dinner at Ho-Hum RV Park in Carrabelle, FL

and piles and piles of Rosette Cookies made exactly how Aunt Lilly from Germany taught me.

Christmas 2021 – Chula Vista, California

Food, in its subtle way, is a whispered prayer for peace.

    In sacredness, nothing is mundane.”
Dogen
Buddhist Japanese Philosopher

Happy holidays from us three to you three, wherever you may find yourselves for the Christmas feast! 🙂 I think we will try and find a quiet corner in Bolivia somewhere, without too much fuss – or fireworks – so Maya can enjoy her time as well.

Merry Christmas to our dear, intrepid travelers. You will be missed at the Les Six soiree this year — Cioppino with a side of eggplant (aubergine in British English) parm, and the requisite bottles of red.
Thanks for the delightful pix and accompanying poetic descriptions. Think of you three often and fondly. Safe travels and see you next year.
As always

We don’t do a whole lot of videos anymore, just document on Instagram and facebook:-) as much as we used to enjoy it, it became more of a chore than fun, and our travels became more about filming instead of enjoying the moment. We’ll post a little video every now and again, but more for a memory, than views. Anyway, thank you so much for the kind words and enjoy the season!!

Yes, we still have our Excella. Once again we put it to good use this year. Made it to the Fort Wilderness, and the Florida National Parks, including the Dry Tortuga’s which we loved. Then on up to Skidaway Island SP in Georgia and visiting with some family on the Outer Banks. Our main summer trip this year was a circling of Lake Superior after making it to Isle Royale from Copper Harbor. Obviously the trailer had to stay put with our dog Lucy. Both campgrounds Sugarloaf Key/Key West KOA and Lake Fannie Hoe Resort provided wonderful dog sitters. Late summer we usually trek to visit one of our son’s family in Westchester county. I made the route to include a few nights in Shenandoah NP. I still have hopes of meeting up with you guys. So yes our silver bullet rolls on!
Merry Christmas to you both.

Lucy is one of the dogs that loves everyone. At the KOA in the keys she stayed in the trailer with multiple visits by the daughter of a work-camper. At Copper Harbor she ended up staying with a young work-camper. She loved Lucy so much I felt guilty taking her back. I’ll try to send you some photos from the Dry Tortugas.

Everyone already said what I’m thinking. We love your posts, and you write so well. Very charming! We have an Airstream and have taken it on a few trips, but we haven’t quite made it to full-time status yet. Nevertheless, you make it seem attainable. So great to hear from you and see what the holidays mean for your life on the road. My personal favorite was the photo of ice skaters in the San Diego sun. That’s the way to do it!! Hope you guys have a lovely holiday and I look forward to reading about your newest adventures in 2024!

Thanks, Carmen!

It’s funny – we often note how different the holidays are here compared to the U.S. You almost wouldn’t know anything was going on, aside from the city’s Christmas lights. Stores might have some decorations, but it’s not the overwhelming, in-your-face style that has become the norm in America, and most private homes have few, if any, visible decorations – no candles in the windows or ornate lighting displays.

Of course, sometimes it’s a bit odd – like when we went to check out one of the Christmas markets and they had a DJ playing pop music and disco hits. Because nothing says “Merry Christmas!!” like a rousing rendition of “Stayin Alive.” 🙂

Anyway, we are here and always happy to see some familiar faces. We’ll leave the light on for ya! (and I’ll send you a friend request on facebook from my personal account next time I’m on there so we can stay connected that way. 🙂 )
