Each year on this day, we pause to mark another year of life on the road.
Published on July 18, 2024 – Narrated by Jim
Today, we start our 9th year traveling full-time in our 2001 30′ Airstream.
Grooving on numbers and designing colorful infographics based on analysis is my thing – not so much for Carmen. Every Living in Beauty Anniversary, she steps aside as I release the pretty shiny numbers.

Numbers are both predictable and revelatory.
They explain things like why Carmen and I take more naps than we did eight years ago 😊 and also why Beauty needs new tires even though it feels like we just forked out a thousand bucks for them. Alas, the tires are five years old. Numbers don’t lie.

Even if you don’t like numbers, you can depend on them. I mean it doesn’t seem that long ago since we pulled out of Fiddler’s Cove on a beautiful summer day in 2016 …

… and here we are, still Out There in 2024, wrapping up 8 years of freedom of movement, living wherever we want whenever we want. A lifestyle widely known as “Living The Dream,” which we call Living in Beauty.

Journaling our long-term travel adventure honors the world’s oldest literature genre – beginning with “The Odyssey” – but without all the drama. We enjoy the ancient tradition of scary travel stories, even though their hidden purpose is to keep people close to home.

Mundane crises come and go and are soon forgotten, but the rewards of positive travel stay with us like jewels sewn into our garments.

Today, we begin our 9th year of living in Beauty.

The ancient mystique of that terminal number deserves consideration.
Possession is 9/10ths of the law. Is that a real thing? Do cat lives peak at 9? And, what comes after Cloud 9? Is Dressed to “the 9’s” the best Lady Gaga can do? And, “the whole nine yards,” is that a Hemp Olympix event? A stitch in time saves nine … of what exactly? ” So, if a 9th grader isn’t available to back me up, does “nine times out of ten” prove anything I want?

And, 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin’ – especially if you’re swingin’ a 9 Pound Hammer at #9 coal mine where 99 miners are trapped inside. It takes 9 months for a human to gestate, and another nine months for it to sleep through the night. In Chinese philosophy, nine is absolute and ranges widely from Love Potion #9 to the early demise of poor Clementine.
#9 isn’t just a number. It demands attention.
In mathematics, #9 holds a special place too numerous to list.

Spiritual writings weigh in on 9’s significance.
In Kabbalah (No, not Cabela’s, the camping store), 9 means, “Truth.” Buddhism reveals the Human Spirit in the “Nine Consciousnesses.” Galatians 5: 22 states the 9 fruits of God’s Holy Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

The ancient Greeks called number nine “the Horizon,” which is “unsurpassable,” the utmost limit of what can be discovered and expressed inside of our human experience.

We certainly hope our 9th year is not unsurpassable 😳 and the uppermost limit of what can be discovered 🫣, but we’re feeling lucky and game for whatever 🤗 because the numbers don’t give us a choice.

We’re looking forward to a fantastic and adventurous – yet, slower and more immersive – 9th year. But, today, we’re looking back at what we’ve already experienced in our first 8 years of full-time travel.

Here are some updated statistics
We have almost reached 3,000 days living in our Airstream.

Beauty has been towed 74,012 miles – that’s equivalent to circling Earth’s equator three times, and our Beauty had been around the block a few times before she joined our family!

We’ve lowered stabilizers 528 times, which averages out to 5 ½ nights between locations.

We’ve stayed at 69 campgrounds for two weeks or longer. Therefore, our best efforts to heed our 4-3-2 travel rule hasn’t panned out to our satisfaction. But, on the bright side, we’ve surpassed other goals.

Without even trying hard, almost 600 nights were FREE. That’s about one out of five nights. Not bad!

And, excellent public parks are easier to access than we anticipated. Though the majority of our nights have been at private parks, we’ve spent more than 200 nights in National parks and almost 600 nights in State parks.

While our favorite free spots are Harvest Hosts locations like wineries, breweries, farms, and museums – we’ve also camped over 100 nights for free on government-owned land.

Combining free and paid nights, our average cost per night for a campsite is $32 – about $960 a month. In our 9th year we’d like to average about $25 per night, as we managed to do in Year #1 and Year #8. That’s quite an accomplishment when in 2024 the average price for a campsite in North America runs $50 per night.

We’ve visited 49 states and 6 Canadian provinces, and stayed more than 50 nights in 18 of them.

When we left Fiddler’s Cove, we had no idea where this journey would take us, or for how long it would last.

We didn’t want to jinx ourselves by making projections, so we stuck to our plan to continue one day at a time, living in Beauty until something happened causing us to pull off the road and do whatever, whenever, wherever. Our retirement un-plan still hasn’t changed, but the world certainly has.

What does the future hold for Living in Beauty?
Good question.
We’re slowing down.

Starting our 9th year, we will travel fewer miles and stay longer in carefully chosen destinations. Like several of our full-timer friends, we are considering a trial period as camp host volunteers.

Since our first blog post on January 19, 2016, we’ve kept our followers up-to-date with the good and bad, pros and cons, tips, ideas, costs, suggestions, gear, locations and our philosophy for successful full-time RV travel.

A Changing World
In the midst of our 8-year escapade, Covid initiated a massive interest in RV camping. Since then, campground overcrowding is the norm (but in our experience the trend affects only the most popular areas with full hook-ups). We expect to see more full-timers on the road as the insurance crisis looms and the climate continues to warm.

In our first four years, we didn’t make plans or reservations, but these days – due to the frequency of weather extremes – defensive measures are an integral part of the toolkit.
Eight years ago, the world was a different place and our magnificent team, Beauty and The Beast, led us merrily through one crises after another without taking a hit. Now, eight years older, we are equipped, positioned and ideally housed to contend with – and adapt to – whatever comes next.

And that’s the magic of #9.
It puts oomph behind “Whatever” and our expectations are infinite.
So stay tuned, there’s more to come as Living in Beauty continues our quest for slow, pleasurable, safe, and sustainable full-time RV travel on this beautiful and rapidly changing planet.
Thank you!
We want to thank the nearly 500,000 visitors to our website who made almost 1 million page views. Wow! We are humbled.

In Closing
We dedicate Year Nine to the ultimate travel companion and security specialist, Pico de Gallo, our unsurpassed traveling dog who delighted our hearts for sixteen years, eight of them on the road. He is greatly missed, but we feel his presence every day. We love you Little Boy.

Congratulations on starting year 9👍. Only 8 years to cover lots of ground – Charles Kuralt would have had questions about the people and places. I look forward to reading about your adventures during the next chapter.
Kevin, thank you! We did accomplish a lot in 8 years. What an adventure it has been. Thanks for following us all these years. Jim
Magical. Safe travels.
Joe, thank you! Jim
I am so happy for you. You are on a journey that most people can only dream of but are too cautious to attempt. We have decided against an RV and are now looking at towing, so maybe we’ll see you on the road or next time you are in town.
Hey Jody!
So, are you saying you have a motorhome? We’d love to catch up with you. Email us whenever you want. Let’s get together!
Safe & Happy Travels!

Larry and Jacquie, we probably wouldn’t be as successful these last 8 years without your friendship and advice. From the day we met you back in April 2015, we knew our Airstream had been taken care of and would serve us for many years. We have thought many times about how fantastic of condition you had the Airstream in when we bought it from you. We quietly thank you often. Not sure when we will make it back to Alabama, but we look forward to it when it does become a part of our plans. Jim
Congratulations on completing 8 years on the road. I’ve followed your adventures for many of those years. In looking at the composite travel map, I see that you have not spent much time in the Heartland. Lots to see and do in this part of our great country. Hopefully your travel plans in Year 9 includes this wonderful part of the country. You won’t regret it.
Hey Vince!
Thank you for being with us for all these years.
Like many RVers, we tend to go where we have family (for us, that’s the Deep South) so, yes, we’ve only given brief attention to The Heartland: Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Wyoming, Kansas, West Virginia, South Dakota … Americans are fortunate to live in a country they can spend an entire lifetime exploring.
There are two dream trips we’d like to make: The Mississippi River RV tour which would give us more time in some of those Heartland states we’ve really only passed through – and, an east coast Maritimes RV tour including Nova Scotia and Quebec. Both of those trips would fill in some of the gaping holes in our travel map.
As always, great to hear from you, Vince!
Safe & Happy Travels!

Congratulations to another 9 more years. missed Pico myself!
enjoy a safe summer!
Thank you & Pico Cheers!

Mason, thank you! It has been an amazing 8 years and hopefully we are gifted more years to come. We do so miss our little Pico de Gallo. Jim
Dang! Congratulations! Really impressive. Love the 8 year animation, awesome!
Thanks for sharing! Good luck moving forward!
Glad you enjoyed the animated map. It is fun to keep it up to date. Thanks for following LIB. Jim
Wow🎉 Congratulations on reaching this milestone and many, many thanks for bringing us along. We appreciate you both sharing your experiences (ups and downs). We are continuing to learn from you as we prepare to embark on our travels in 2025. We enjoy your beautiful photos and graphics, and yes, little Pico is truly missed 💕
Matt and Lilia, thank you for your kind words. Congratulations on your decision to hit the road in 2025. Maybe our paths will cross somewhere ‘out there.’ Glad you enjoy the photos and graphics. Carmen is the photographer and I do the graphics, so we both thank you! Jim
Enjoy your travelogue immensely. Hard to believe it’s been 8 years already. You started when I got my first Airstream and I’ve barely entered my second ten thousand miles. Camp hosting can be rewarding. Long days but generally nice people and the biggest plus for me was getting the luxury of extended time to do a deep dive into the area. Bon voyage!
Glad you have enjoyed our travelogue. We almost enjoy writing about our adventure as much as we enjoy living it. 😉 Not really! Living this lifestyle is amazing!!!! Writing about it is fun! Congratulations on your purchase of your Airstream back in 2016 when we started. Towing more than 10,000 is quite an accomplishment. It will be interesting to find out if we enjoy camp hosting. Having moved more than 500 times in 8 years, it would be very different to stay in one place for while. We will see! Again, thanks for following LIB. Jim
Beautifully written! Thanks for sharing
Hey Cynthia! Did you see us waving at you from the 10 as we passed through Benson two days ago at 4AM to escape the heat dome? When Benson is all lit up at night it could almost pass for a big city! So sorry we missed you, but hope to see you soon at reunion. xoxo Carmen
Wow ! Where does the time go ? Congratulations!
I know, Brian. It’s like that creepy hourglass from Days of our Lives. Carmen
First, wonderful dedication to Pico de Gallo. I understand. My animals are the only reason I have a RV. Congratulations on your journey. So much perseverance and effort goes into a journey like this, but the rewards are, well you only really know if you live it. I never truly learned to live in the moment until I started doing cross country RV trips.
I’ve been doing the 4-3-2 rule the last two years. This is also my 9th year and I am slowing down. I am just winging it this year, not sure where I will end up. Anyhow, here’s to another year of safe travel and good health. I loved the part you wrote about the nines, especially this part, “Galatians 5: 22 states the 9 fruits of God’s Holy Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
Rob, so great to hear from you! Pico was such a special little dog, he deserved a special tribute. Thanks for your comment. The rewards for living this lifestyle are wonderful in so many ways. We hope we can continue traveling for awhile longer. Congratulations on discovering the joy of living in the moment! Going cross country and seeing this amazing continent is truly life changing. Glad to hear you are attempting the 4-3-2 rule. We are trying ourselves, but fail often. Stay safe out there! Jim
Enjoy and be safe in your newest Adventures!
Bob, thank you! Jim
I want to congratulate you for these years on the road and the great content that you have been offering for years! You are very inspiring! THANKS! THANKS!
Thank you! you made our day!!!! Jim
I aspire to travel like you with an Airstream. I discovered you and I follow you from Quebec. I like slow travel too. I wish you a wonderful, smooth 9th year! Thank you for everything!
We love following your journey! Nothing wrong with slowing down—enjoy Year 9 and best wishes for all the good things to come.
Laura, glad you love following our journey. We do indeed enjoy writing about the adventure. Thank you for your good wishes. Jim
WOW!!!
Agreed! lol Jim
Safe travels
Candace, thank you! Jim
Wow!
Alan, It has been a wild ride!!!!! Jim
Congratulations on your 9 year vacation, I have a bottle of Macallan’s waiting to celebrate🎉
Brad, excellent idea!!!!!! Jim
How many miles on Da Beast at this point? Glad it’s still rollin’!
Steve, the BEAST has 166,000 miles on it. But still going strong. Jim
Congratulations on eight years as RVing nomads! Cheers to year nine and slower travel!
That first year, you sure clocked some miles. And, wow, campgrounds are getting expensive. We love boondocking (as you know), which we do 99% of the time, slightly less in South America. Honestly, we couldn’t afford this lifestyle if we had to pay almost $1,000 a month on just camping. That’s close to our total budget, haha.
Being camp hosts sounds like a great alternative, especially when you want to stay put for a while. I’d be up for that if we would be back in North America for a few years.
On a different topic, the red leaves in your “ Square Pond in the Adirondacks – near Saranac Lake, New York” photo looks like a surfer!
Liesbet, it is always wonderful to see your name pop up on comments. We so admire your travels and your blog, http://www.roamingabout.com. Yep, we sure did put on the miles that first year. We were crazy!!!!!! Learned our lesson to sloooooooow down. We realize your three boondock a lot more than we do. We are comfortable with free camping about 20% of the time. We think if we had started at an earlier age, like you, we might have attempted more boondocking. Also, these old bones appreciate an occasional hot soak or a swim in a pool. It will be interesting to see if we like camp hosting. Staying in one place for a few months would be a new experience, so we will see. Now that you mention it and I take a close look at the photo of Square Pond, you are right, the leaves of the tree look like a surfer. How funny. Stay safe out there! Jim
Brilliant! Thank you and Happy Anniversary! ❤️ Lindy
Lindy, thank you for your kind comments! Jim
WOW! Nice documentation ~ Thanks for sharing this over the years ~
Shari, Thank you! Jim
Safe travels to you
Thanks! Jim
Would you adopt me?
❤️🤪
Jim and Carmen, as you know, Jacquie and I have been with you from the very beginning. We’ve enjoyed so much sharing your adventures. We were “semi full timers” for more than 20 years when I worked as a contractor for a company. During our time we had two different 5th wheels, and two Airstream’s (yours was one of them). During those years we traveled more than 225,000 miles in the United States and Canada. Now, we’re content to follow your travels. We still have a spot in our driveway when your in the Lower Alabama area. God speed my friends!
Larry and Jacquie.
Larry and Jacquie, we probably wouldn’t be as successful these last 8 years without your friendship and advice. From the day we met you back in April 2015, we knew our Airstream had been taken care of and would serve us for many years. 8 years and counting…..way to go!! We love hearing all about your adventures and travels, and love your easy going attitude and love of life.
We too miss Pico’s adventures, but what a wonderful life he had.
Hoping you guys make it up to British Columbia way again, would love to see you again. Happy trails.
love Pattie and Paul
Pattie, wonderful to hear from you. With all the BC fires, we think about you two often, along with Doug and Laura. I so enjoyed celebrating my birthday with you all back in 2018 at that great restaurant outside the Shuswap Lake Park. We do hope someday to make it back up to British Columbia. We would love to stop by and see you. Stay safe out there and happy travels. Jim
That video is EVERYTHING! This blog is incredible…clever, packed with great info. 9.999 out of 10!❤️
Dale, Thank you for your kind words. It has been an incredible 8 years so far!! Jim
Yes, over the course of 8 years, camping things have changed a lot – but the challenge and joy remains. Loved your 8 year animated map – there’s still a lot of places unvisited. Happy Trails. [We’re in Michigan (climate change escape land) and will hit 100k miles on or near the Mackinaw Bridge.]
Joe, it really is amazing how much camping has changed since we hit the road in July 2016. Of course COVID had a lot to do with that. Yes, there is still a lot of joy in living this lifestyle and we cannot imagine ever stopping. Glad you like the animated map, it is fun to create. Stay safe out there! Love to Ronnie. Jim
